This home is located in a listed rationalist building (Edificio Sans) built by the architect Jaume Mestres i Fossas in 1935. Over the years, the flat had suffered many transformations to the point of becoming the industrial kitchen of the ground floor business.
Finding the flat in such a state, our main goal was reclaiming it and recovering some of its original architectural components in order to adapt it to current needs.
Finding out the building structure consisted of metal pillars was a surprise since it wasn’t a common practice at the time and allowed us great flexibility when defining the new layout.
The project’s main decision was making the kitchen the centre of the flat, from where one can see its surroundings through a steel and glass enclosure that lets in natural light coming from the main façade and enables one to view the outside.
With regard to materials, ceramic filler block original ceilings were recovered in the public areas so as to provide warmth to the home. We also recovered most of the original carpentry in order to preserve the flat’s original character. The most damaged or later added carpentry was replaced by a copy with greater features.
One of the project premises was to use few materials so as to obtain a neutral look. There’s natural wooden flooring everywhere except on bathrooms and kitchen, where it’s replaced by light porcelain stoneware that imitates natural stone. The white colour of walls and carpentry (doors and windows) enhances the other materials and emphasises the recovered ceilings from the main areas.
Adjustable blinds with mobile slats filter the large quantity of light coming from the façade large windows and thus protect the adjacent spaces from excess light and street views.
