This home is located in the charismatic maritime quarter of Barceloneta. Although it is part of its dense urban fabric, it doesn’t belong to this district’s classic style since the building containing it was built in 1948 due to a relatively new urban action. Thus, the flat has a slightly larger area than the quarter’s average but what makes it especially interesting is its double orientation, facing two different streets.
The original layout had three bedrooms in quite a limited area. The main goal of this project was to achieve a sense of spaciousness so we decided to remove one of the bedrooms and relocate the kitchen.
The structure of the flat consisted of two bearing walls parallel to the façades, creating three corridors which gave us flexibility in regard to defining the new layout. The living room, dining room and kitchen are together in one of the exterior corridors. The other exterior corridor contains the bedrooms and the central one –transition between daytime and night time areas- contains the main hall/foyer and bathroom differing from the rest in its flooring. This central area works as a multipurpose space –study or kids play area- due to its size.
With maximum spaciousness and brightness in mind, we increased the permeability of the spaces. Through its openings one appreciates the depth of the home, gaining a sense of spaciousness.
With regard to materials, light tones were chosen in order to enhance brightness. The wallpaper with vegetal motifs and bare brick walls in the living room provide texture, colour and warmth to this home.
